The indictment alleges Christopher Smith, 43, stabbed and killed William K. McMahon between April 17 and April 21. Smith then attempted to hide the remains in the planter, the District Attorney said.
State Police, along with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Orange County Medical Examiner and the Plattekill Fire Department found McMahon's remains during a missing person investigation.
“Those who engage in violence must not be allowed to escape the consequences of their actions,” said District Attorney Hoovler. “My office will continue to make the prosecution of all violent crimes, particularly those involving the loss of life, our highest priority. No family should have to grieve for the loss of a loved one killed due to violence. I am thankful that the New York State Police were able to locate the remains of the victim of this crime and commend them on their investigation.”
Smith has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon, concealment of a human corpse, tampering with physical evidence and making a punishable false written statement.
Smith remains in Orange County Jail in lieu of $500,000 cash or $1,500,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 15.
